~Jimmy Strait~

SHINER: Jimmy Lay Strait, 76, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 6, 1948 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late Walter Freeman Strait and Lenore Beatrice (Miller) Strait.

Jimmy was a man of many talents. He loved God, his family and his country. He was a veteran having served in the Army with the 187th Assault Helicopter Company during Vietnam. He served in the Navy Reserves with the VR-59 Squadron as a C-9B Crew Chief, during this time, he was activated and deployed to Desert Shield and Desert Storm conflicts. 

He has attended and hosted several 187th AHC reunions over the years. He was the Commander of American Legion Post #201 in Shiner. He was also a Licensed Minister. He served as a Deacon at his church, Shiner Baptist. As a member of the church’s Missions Team, they developed the Psalm 91 Project. This provides care packages to deployed soldiers that includes a Bible, letters of encouragement from church members, and goodies. 

He lived every day leading by example and was a cheerful giver. He belonged to the Texas Baptist Men’s group who assisted with disaster recovery. Prior to retirement, he was a self-employed General Contractor and stone mason, designing and building stone waterfalls. He had a passion for aviation. He was a pilot, an A&P mechanic and also held an IA license.

He loved golfing, flying, NASCAR, camping and taking cruises with his beloved wife Michelle of 53 years. He loved Christmas, being at the lake house and family vacations. He really loved attending his grandkids’ school and sports events.

Survivors are his wife Michelle (Rasher) Strait of Shiner; daughters, Lucinda Pustka (Kevin) of Shiner and Marcella Beckerle (Robert) of Missouri; son, Justin Strait of Colorado; 8 grandchildren, Hannah, Carly and Erin Pustka, Ruby and Moses Strait, Liesel, Weston and Isla Beckerle; sister, Dale Roan of Ireland; brothers, Don Strait (Jan) Wills Point, Tx, Randy Strait (Hope) of Caddo Mills, Tx and Jimmy Lee Strait of Mississippi; numerous extended family and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother, Henry Strait.

Visitation 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2024 at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home.

Funeral Service 10 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Shiner Lutheran Church with Pastor Jay Fleming officiating. Burial to follow at Shiner City Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons and granddaughters.

Memorials may be given to 187th AHC or Shiner Baptist Church.
